UPDATE: Bundoora United has finally clinched its first victory of the season, defeating Rosebank with a score of 4-147 in a thrilling match on Saturday. This win marks a critical turning point for the Bulldogs in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association Barclay Shield as they aim to avoid relegation.
The Bulldogs’ skipper, Joel Thompson, expressed relief following the win, stating, “It was nice to get one on the board and it hopefully leads to more.” The team had faced a challenging start to the season, having contended with both grand finalists in their first two matches. “We’ve been in positions to win in both games but weren’t good enough,” Thompson added.
In a strategic move, the Bulldogs opted to bowl first, successfully limiting Rosebank to 7-146. Despite a strong start by Rosebank at 0-49, Bundoora’s bowlers, including Riley Gaylard and Scott Barnett, each took two crucial wickets to secure control of the innings. “We were able to bowl tightly to restrict Rosebank from getting a good total,” Thompson noted.
Bundoora’s batting strategy also saw a revamp, paying off as they reached the winning total with three overs to spare. Thompson set the pace with an impressive 50 runs off 38 balls, while William Brennan contributed with a solid 42 not out to guide the team home.
The victory elevates the Bulldogs to eighth place in the table, a crucial position as the competition undergoes restructuring which will see the bottom three teams relegated. “With three sides going down from Barclay Shield, it will be tough,” Thompson warned. He emphasized the importance of this win as a potential springboard for success, highlighting last year’s near-miss for finals qualification.
Looking ahead, Bundoora United will face Diamond Creek in their next match, with Thompson expressing eagerness to play at home after their previous matches were impacted by rain. The club is also celebrating the debut of 15-year-old Cooper Walshe in the first XI, showcasing the successful pathway from junior to senior cricket.
In other matches, Bundoora triumphed over Heidelberg, while Epping decisively defeated Riverside. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Bundoora United to see if this victory can ignite a winning streak.
