BREAKING: Capital Chemist in Bathurst has just been named the NSW Community Pharmacy of the Year for 2026, confirming its innovative approach to healthcare. This recognition highlights the pharmacy’s commitment to improving health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable patients, through a unique blend of services and community engagement.
In a stunning announcement, co-owner Marcus Heiner expressed surprise at the accolade, stating, “We didn’t know; I was confident that what we’re doing is really unique.” With nearly 50 employees serving an average of 15,000 customers each month, Capital Chemist has redefined what a pharmacy can offer, moving beyond traditional medication dispensing.
The pharmacy’s pioneering Homecare and NDIS support model is being adopted nationwide, emphasizing a holistic approach to healthcare. Capital Chemist aims to connect clients with necessary services by understanding their individual needs, a strategy that Heiner believes significantly enhances patient outcomes. “I’m convinced it massively improves patient health outcomes,” he stated, particularly for those seeking to maintain their independence.
Heiner, who took over the business with his wife, Hannah Heiner, in 2010, noted that the pharmacy has evolved from a “clunky system” to a refined model capable of delivering essential health connections. He added, “Instead of just being a medication provider, we can now connect them to any part of the health system that would improve their health.”
In addition to its innovative support model, Capital Chemist provides a range of health services, including vaccinations, asthma checks, and testing for blood glucose, blood pressure, and sleep apnea. “Anything we can’t do, we shouldn’t be involved in. But if there is an area the pharmacy can help in, we should be enabled to do that for patients,” Heiner affirmed.
With the NSW award under its belt, Capital Chemist is now eligible for the national award in 2026, competing against top pharmacies from each state. Heiner emphasized that the award reflects the hard work and dedication of his team, stating, “Without the team, there is no way any of the new services or any of the innovation could have occurred.”
As discussions continue about expanding their health initiatives, Heiner remains focused on identifying gaps in the healthcare system. “It’s finding areas of the health system that aren’t functioning. If there’s something working well, we don’t need to be involved, but if there are areas that aren’t functioning, can we do something better?” he said.
This award not only celebrates Capital Chemist’s accomplishments but also sets a precedent for what community pharmacies can achieve across Australia. With its innovative model and commitment to patient care, Capital Chemist is poised to lead the way in transforming community pharmacy services for years to come.
