URGENT UPDATE: A grizzly bear has launched a shocking attack on a group of schoolchildren and teachers in Bella Coola, British Columbia, injuring 11 people, with 2 critically injured. The terrifying incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon, October 26, 2023, along a walking trail approximately 700 km northwest of Vancouver.
Authorities confirm that the “aggressive bear” remains at large, prompting local officials from the Nuxalk Nation to urge residents to “remain indoors and off the highway.” Police and conservation officers are on-site, armed and prepared to handle the situation.
Emergency Health Services spokesperson, Brian Twaites, reported that while two individuals are in critical condition and another two sustained serious injuries, the remaining victims received treatment at the scene. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene as teachers attempted to fend off the bear, with one male teacher suffering significant injuries.
Parent Veronica Schooner shared her son’s harrowing experience. Her 10-year-old son, Alvarez, was in the class that encountered the bear. “He even felt its fur,” she said, recounting how close he was to the animal as it pursued others. Shockingly, some children were hit with bear spray during the struggle. Alvarez returned home limping, covered in mud from fleeing for safety. “He keeps crying for his friends, and oh my goodness, right away he started praying for his friends,” Schooner added, highlighting the emotional toll on the young survivors.
The Acwsalcta School, an independent institution managed by the Nuxalk First Nation, announced via Facebook that classes will be suspended on Friday, October 27, 2023. Counseling services will be made available to support students and staff during this traumatic time. “It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students,” the school stated in their post.
As this story develops, officials are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates on the bear’s whereabouts and safety measures for the community. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and follow local authorities’ instructions.
This alarming incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife in populated areas. The community is now left grappling with the aftermath of this frightening attack. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
