UPDATE: The Victorian Supreme Court is currently hearing a harrowing case involving the murder of 72-year-old John Hunter, whose body was discovered in his Dimboola home on January 23, 2023. Thomas Clarke, aged 57, has confessed to the brutal crime during a plea hearing, shocking friends and family with the details.
The court learned that Mr. Hunter’s death was not just a tragedy; it has left deep emotional scars on those who knew him. Friend David Brown expressed profound sorrow, stating, “I lost not just a friend but a much-needed support.” He lamented the lost time with Mr. Hunter, who was undergoing treatment for lung disease and required an oxygen pump.
Clarke’s violent actions unfolded on January 20, when he reportedly demanded money from Mr. Hunter while intoxicated. Prosecutor Briana Goding detailed the gruesome nature of the crime, revealing that Clarke used a hammer to strike Mr. Hunter multiple times in the head, ultimately killing him in the kitchen before dragging his body into a spare bedroom.
The horror did not end there. A box cutter was employed to mutilate Mr. Hunter’s body, with chilling details including gouged eyes and mutilated genitals. His remains were discovered covered with a curtain, leaving the community in shock.
The trial also heard about the background of Clarke, which includes a history of trauma and mental health issues. Defence barrister Sharon Lacey SC described his life as marked by “disadvantage, systemic discrimination, and intergenerational trauma.” Clarke suffers from a personality disorder and complex PTSD, according to forensic psychiatrist Rajan Darjee, who indicated that Clarke’s fragile mental state contributed to the escalation of violence.
As the court proceedings continue, the prosecution argues that this murder has devastated the lives of Mr. Hunter’s loved ones. “This was a brutal murder of a deeply loved man,” Ms. Goding stated, emphasizing the ongoing impact on friends and family.
In a twist of fate, a jury trial in December previously acquitted Jodie Hill, who was charged alongside Clarke, of involvement in the murder. She maintains her innocence regarding the attack.
Justice Jane Dixon has described the entire situation as a “tragedy” and will announce sentencing for Clarke at a later date. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of this horrific crime, with Mr. Brown highlighting that the violence has robbed them of precious time and connection.
As the case unfolds, many are left wondering about Clarke’s future and the potential for rehabilitation, especially concerning his substance use. The courtroom remains tense as the full extent of the tragedy continues to unravel.
Stay tuned for further updates as this urgent case develops, impacting not just the families involved but the entire Dimboola community.
