Police Respond to Two Violent Football Matches in Melbourne

BREAKING: Two violent incidents at local football matches in Melbourne have prompted police intervention over the weekend. The first event occurred on August 2, 2023, around 9:00 PM during a thirds match between Hoppers Crossing and North Sunshine at Hogans Reserve.

Authorities confirm that police were called to Hogans Road after multiple reports to triple-0 indicated a brawl involving as many as 100 people. Witnesses say the chaos erupted on the field among players before escalating as spectators joined the fray.

A police spokesperson stated, “Although the incident had dissipated when police arrived, officers maintained a presence to ensure players could leave the ground without incident.” Officers instructed the gathered crowd to disperse and move on.

Two individuals were arrested: a 19-year-old Hoppers Crossing man and an 18-year-old Werribee man, both for failing to obey police directions. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported at the scene. However, it was later revealed that a 33-year-old man from Little River sought medical treatment for injuries sustained during the altercation, but he declined to provide a statement to authorities.

The match was halted with Hoppers Crossing leading at 9.2 (56) to 6.8 (44). Police are actively seeking more information about the brawl and urge anyone with details to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or submit a tip online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Less than 24 hours later, another incident was reported at Salesian College in Sunbury during a reserves match between Rupertswood and Northern Saints. Police responded to reports of an affray; however, no injuries were reported, and the teams were successfully separated without further incident.

The recent spate of violence at these local matches raises concerns about safety in community sports. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as police investigate both incidents further.
