UPDATE: Four protesters have been arrested at the Tower of London after throwing custard and apple crumble at the display case of the Imperial State Crown. The incident occurred shortly before 10 AM on July 15, 2023, prompting a temporary closure of part of the historic site housing the Crown Jewels.
According to London police, the protesters, linked to the civil resistance group Take Back Power, vandalized the display in an act aimed at raising awareness for their campaign to tax the wealthy. Social media footage showed two individuals smothering the case with food while other visitors gasped in shock.
The police confirmed that the protesters were taken into custody for criminal damage. Authorities stated, “The Jewel House has been closed to the public while the police investigation continues.” Fortunately, they also reassured the public that “The Crown Jewels have not been damaged.”
The Imperial State Crown, worn by King Charles during significant occasions like the State Opening of Parliament and his coronation in Westminster Abbey in 2023, remains one of the main attractions at the Tower, which draws over three million visitors annually.
A spokesperson from Historic Royal Palaces, which manages the Tower, confirmed that staff responded swiftly to the incident, activating emergency protocols as soon as the vandalism occurred. Video footage captured the moment employees intervened and radioed for assistance while the protesters unveiled a sign declaring, “Democracy has crumbled. Tax the rich.”
This incident not only disrupts access to a national treasure but also spotlights ongoing debates about wealth inequality in the UK. The Tower of London, with its rich history as both a royal palace and a notorious prison, has become a stage for civil disobedience as activists seek to amplify their message.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging the public to remain calm and are working to ensure the safety and security of visitors to this iconic landmark. Expect further updates as police continue to assess the situation.
