Racing Legend Allan Moffat Dies at 86, Leaving Lasting Legacy

BREAKING: Australian motorsport mourns the loss of racing icon Allan Moffat, who passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday morning. Surrounded by loved ones, Moffat succumbed to a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, which he had been diagnosed with in 2019.

Moffat, a four-time Bathurst champion, is remembered as a pioneer of the sport, whose influence extended beyond the racetrack. His remarkable career spanned over five decades, solidifying him as a defining figure in Australian motorsport history.

“Allan was a pioneer, a champion, and an icon whose impact on our sport is impossible to measure,” stated James Warburton, CEO of Supercars. “His record speaks for itself. He was a dominant force during one of the most competitive eras in touring car racing.”

Moffat’s illustrious career includes victories at Bathurst in 1970, 1971, 1973, and 1977. He was also the face of Ford in Australia, known for his fierce rivalry with fellow racer Peter Brock. Moffat’s legacy is marked by 32 race victories in the Touring Car Championships and a record of taking pole position in three consecutive years.

“But Allan’s legacy reaches far beyond the racetrack,” Warburton continued. “He brought a new level of professionalism to the sport, transforming the role of sponsorship and team management in ways that shaped the modern era of Supercars.”

Moffat also enjoyed success later in his career with Mazda, further cementing his status as a versatile and talented driver. His family released a heartfelt statement, saying, “Australia has lost one of its sporting legends today with the passing of Allan Moffat OBE. He was a towering figure whose influence shaped the nation’s motorsport identity for more than five decades.”

Born in Canada, Moffat moved to Australia at age 17 and quickly became a household name. His contributions to the sport have been celebrated widely, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of racers.

As motorsport fans around the globe reflect on Moffat’s significant contributions, the racing community is reminded of the indelible mark he has left on the sport. “Revered for his skill, tenacity, and exceptional professionalism, Moffat’s legacy is etched into Australian sporting history,” his family concluded.

In the wake of his passing, tributes from fans and fellow racers are pouring in, highlighting the profound impact Moffat had on the motorsport community. His spirit and accomplishments will be forever remembered.
