UPDATE: In a dramatic turn of events, The Nook, a cherished cooperative of local artists in Leura Mall, has secured a new three-year lease after community uproar over a potential closure. Just last month, rising rent had left the collective of 32 artisans facing the grim possibility of shutting down after 29 years of operation.
The urgency surrounding The Nook’s fate gripped the community, igniting a wave of support across social media. Director Deanne Palmer expressed her gratitude, stating, “We have been blown away by the community support, both in-store and on social media. We had no idea how much people loved our diverse range of handmade products.” Following the announcement of the potential closure, the cooperative gained 200 new friends on Facebook, with hundreds of comments lamenting the loss of this beloved institution.
After intense negotiations, The Nook’s management reached a compromise, alleviating fears of closure. “After a very stressful month of negotiations and thinking that our amazing co-operative had come to an end, a last-minute compromise was reached,” Palmer confirmed. “We are relieved to have obtained a new three-year lease.”
This unexpected turnaround means The Nook will celebrate its 30-year anniversary next year in its beloved location at 133a Leura Mall. The news has been met with enthusiasm from the community, with supporters like Audrey Mason posting, “Congratulations!! You’re an important part of our community,” and Lisa Forrest adding, “Great news, congratulations Nookers!”
Palmer noted that while costs have increased, the cooperative remains committed to providing unique, handmade products that resonate with the local community. The Nook’s resilience echoes a broader message of community support and the importance of small businesses.
As The Nook moves forward, the cooperative plans to host events to celebrate its milestones and deepen community ties. Residents are encouraged to visit and support local artists in this now-stable environment.
The Nook’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that community support can have on local businesses. As the cooperative embarks on its new chapter, all eyes will be on how they continue to engage and inspire the Blue Mountains community.
