URGENT UPDATE: A devastating thunderstorm system has left one woman dead and millions bracing for continued wet weather along Australia’s east coast. The severe weather, which struck on Saturday, July 15, 2023, has prompted over 800 calls for assistance to emergency services in New South Wales (NSW).
A tragic incident occurred when a tree branch fell on a car in Macquarie Pass, south of Wollongong, killing the female driver. A male passenger sustained minor injuries, while two others in the backseat were unharmed. This incident underscores the potential dangers posed by the ongoing storms.
Senior meteorologist Edward Townsend-Medlock warns that while the wild weather is expected to weaken, heavy rainfall will continue across areas from Sydney’s northern suburbs to the Hunter Coast. “Within that concentrated area, we could see some of those more severe thunderstorm cells,” he stated.
As of Sunday morning, authorities confirm that 750 SES volunteers are actively responding to storm-related incidents, particularly in the South Coast, Illawarra, Sydney, and Hunter regions. Almost 200mm of rain fell at Moruya within 48 hours leading up to 9 AM on Saturday, necessitating response to 30 separate incidents including leaking roofs and flash flooding.
NSW SES spokeswoman Emily Barton emphasizes the importance of public safety as clean-up efforts continue. “It’s particularly important that if people are out and about and come across a flooded road, they stop and turn around,” she advised, urging residents to stay updated on the latest warnings.
Hazardous surf warnings remain in effect for multiple beaches, stretching from Newcastle to Batemans Bay and along the Eden coast. As the storm system moves offshore by Sunday afternoon, rain is expected to persist, but officials assure there is no immediate threat of further severe thunderstorms.
In related weather patterns, Queensland also faced storms, with up to 60mm of rain reported and around 11,000 properties left without power. Meanwhile, Victoria is set to enjoy sunny weather as the Australian Open’s main draw kicks off, with Melbourne expected to reach a high of 29°C.
Looking ahead, residents are urged to remain vigilant and heed official advice as the clean-up continues. The situation remains fluid, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Stay safe and informed as Australia grapples with the aftermath of this severe weather event.
