US Resumes Caribbean Flights Following Venezuela Military Operation

US airspace restrictions over the Caribbean are set to lift following a military operation against Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro. Sean Duffy, the US Transportation Secretary, announced on March 10, 2024, that airlines can resume operations as safety concerns related to the recent conflict have been addressed.

Major airlines, including United Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue Airways, had canceled hundreds of flights due to an airspace closure imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Duffy’s statement on social media indicated that airlines are swiftly updating their schedules and preparing to return to normal operations. United Airlines announced it would resume flights to the Caribbean, starting with services to San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Saturday night, with expectations to operate most scheduled flights by Sunday.

Despite the lifting of restrictions, airlines will require several days to fully restore their operations. Airline analyst Robert Mann noted that many passengers remain stranded across the Caribbean, indicating that airlines have a backlog of travelers to accommodate. JetBlue alone canceled 215 flights during the airspace closure, which was initiated due to “safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing military activity” in the region.

The FAA’s airspace restrictions were also applicable to non-US carriers, which were advised to avoid Venezuelan airspace due to potential threats from military activity, including the risk of anti-aircraft weaponry. The agency’s notice specifically cautioned British operators to steer clear of areas within 160 kilometers of Venezuelan borders.

The FAA has not provided further comment regarding the situation. Several European and South American airlines have also canceled their flights in response to the heightened security risks. Duffy stated that airspace restrictions would be lifted “when appropriate,” indicating a cautious approach to resuming normal air traffic.

Incidents of military activity near Venezuela have raised serious safety concerns for commercial flights. A notable event occurred in November when a near mid-air collision was reported between a JetBlue airliner and a US aerial refueling tanker, underscoring the dangers present in the region.

As a response to the disruptions, many airlines have waived change fees and fare differences for passengers affected by the cancellations, allowing them to postpone travel without added costs.

In a statement, Air Canada confirmed that its Caribbean and South American operations remain unaffected and that they continue to monitor the evolving situation under the guidance of Transport Canada.

As of now, commercial air traffic over Venezuelan airspace has significantly declined, with records from FlightRadar24 showing a halt in operations following the military attack on March 9, 2024. The international aviation community remains vigilant as developments unfold in Venezuela.
