Kevin Rudd Exits as Ambassador; Asia Society Awaits His Return

Kevin Rudd will soon leave his post as Australia’s Ambassador to the United States, returning to his previous role as head of the Asia Society in New York. His tenure has been marked by significant challenges, particularly in light of the contentious political climate surrounding former President Donald Trump. As Rudd prepares for this transition, reflections on his time in Washington have revealed a sense of relief that the situation did not deteriorate further.

Many observers anticipated that Trump’s potential re-election would jeopardize Rudd’s ambassadorship. The former Australian Prime Minister’s critical remarks about Trump—including calling him “the most destructive president in history” and “a traitor to the West”—did not go unnoticed. During a notably tense meeting at the White House, Trump openly expressed his disdain, stating, “I don’t like you either, and I probably never will,” as Anthony Albanese and the global media looked on.

Despite the hostility, Rudd managed to navigate the complexities of the relationship between Australia and the United States. While Australia has struggled to fully mitigate the impacts of Trump’s trade policies, the country has still found ways to benefit. Australian exports have been subjected to a 10 percent baseline levy under Trump’s trade agenda, but many local exporters have gained an advantage due to the relative nature of these tariffs.

As Rudd prepares to depart, questions arise about the timing of his exit. Given the public humiliation he faced from Trump, some speculate he could have remained in the role until the end of Trump’s term. Albanese confirmed that Rudd’s decision to return to the Asia Society was entirely his own, yet the Prime Minister’s lack of effort to persuade him to stay suggests a recognition of the need for a fresh face in the ambassadorial role.

Looking ahead, potential candidates to succeed Rudd include former Labor frontbenchers Joel Fitzgibbon, Stephen Conroy, and Greg Combet. Conroy’s past comments describing Trump as “moronically stupid” may complicate his candidacy, highlighting the need for tact and diplomacy in the next appointment.

As Rudd steps away from formal diplomatic responsibilities, he will likely regain the freedom to express his true views on Australia’s pivotal relationship with the United States. This shift may lead to more candid commentary on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, both for Australia and its interactions with one of its closest allies.

The editorial reflects a broader sentiment within Australian political circles: while Rudd’s time as ambassador was fraught with difficulties, the outcome could have been significantly worse. Rudd’s departure opens the door for a new ambassador to approach these vital diplomatic ties with a fresh perspective.
