A remarkable moment unfolded at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on January 10, 2023, when Jayden Webb, a fan from Newcastle, was invited on stage by British rockstar Yungblud to perform his song “fleabag.” Webb’s spontaneous decision to create a sign showcasing his unique talent of playing the guitar upside down led to an unforgettable experience for both the performer and the audience.
As tens of thousands gathered to watch Yungblud live, Webb held up a sign that read, “I can play ‘fleabag’ upside down.” His bold move captured the attention of the singer, who often invites fans to participate during his concerts. Webb, now residing in Wollongong, was thrilled to be selected and took to the stage to showcase his skills.
“It was unreal,” Webb said. “Being up on stage, I felt like I was in my element; it wasn’t even nerves, it was pure adrenaline.” This exhilarating experience came after a light-hearted conversation with his wife, Lyndsay Webb, earlier that day. While returning home from lunch, she suggested that he learn the song, knowing Yungblud’s reputation for engaging with fans.
Webb, who has been playing guitar since the age of eight, was initially taken aback. He explained, “I’m left-handed, and most guitarists are right-handed.” After some encouragement from Lyndsay, he embraced the challenge. “She said, well, learn it upside down then, you’ve got basically an hour to get it sorted before we hit the road,” he recalled.
In a race against time, Webb practiced for an hour, first learning the song in its standard orientation and then switching to his wife’s guitar to master the upside-down version. He described it as a mix of optimism and determination, despite Lyndsay’s playful skepticism about the feasibility of his plan.
Once at the concert, they managed to navigate through the crowd to secure a spot near the front. As Yungblud began to play, Webb’s heart raced. “I thought, oh well, he’s not going to pull anyone up, and then all of a sudden, he stops playing and looks over,” he stated, recalling the pivotal moment when he caught the singer’s eye.
The interaction culminated in a lively performance where Yungblud humorously commented that it seemed fitting to play the guitar upside down while in Australia. Webb described the experience as “awesome” and “just an insane experience,” highlighting the thrill of performing live in front of a passionate crowd.
Beyond this memorable encounter, Webb has a rich musical background. He performed at the Sydney Opera House during the HSC showcase Encore after graduating from Cardiff High School. Currently, he works as a metallurgist, valuing music as a cherished hobby rather than a career, as he believes pursuing it professionally could diminish the joy it brings.
This unexpected stage appearance not only showcased Webb’s musical talent but also underscored the connection between fans and artists, creating a moment that will likely resonate for years to come.
