Paul Kelly Debuts Sequel to Classic Hit in Perth Concert

Paul Kelly 2025 - RAC Arena, Perth

Iconic Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly made history on March 12, 2024, during a sold-out concert at RAC Arena in Perth. The event marked the debut of his long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1996 classic, “How To Make Gravy.” Accompanied by his backing band, including his nephew and guitarist Dan Kelly, the 70-year-old artist treated fans to the first live performance of the new ballad, “Rita Wrote A Letter.”

In a heartfelt moment, Kelly acknowledged the significance of the occasion, stating, “This is the first time playing it in front of people.” The original song tells the poignant story of Joe, a prisoner reflecting on his regrets as he writes to his family during the festive season. The sequel shifts to Rita’s perspective, exploring her reflections on Joe’s imprisonment and her choice to move on without him. Building excitement, Kelly teased the audience, sharing, “It turns out Joe was right to be worried because Rita Wrote A Letter.”

Despite the weight of the song’s themes, the atmosphere was lively. After the performance, Kelly playfully sought feedback from the audience, asking, “What do you reckon?” His engaging style resonated with fans, who responded warmly to the new material.

Supporting Kelly were fellow Australian country singer Fanny Lumsden and Grammy Award-winning artist Lucinda Williams. At 72, Williams showcased her enduring talent, delivering powerful performances that captivated the crowd.

On March 13, Kelly expressed his gratitude to the Perth audience by sharing highlights from the evening on social media. He wrote, “Night one and we’re back on the road again. Thank you, Perth!” This concert kicked off his national tour, with upcoming shows scheduled in Brisbane on March 15, followed by performances in Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide, and Melbourne.

As fans eagerly anticipate the remaining dates of his tour, Kelly’s return to the stage with new music promises to add another chapter to his storied career. His ability to blend storytelling with music continues to resonate, making each performance a unique experience for audiences across Australia.
