Hawks Alumni Rally for Yerbury Lab in Pre-Game Event

In a heartfelt gathering before the Illawarra Hawks’ victory against the Brisbane Bullets on March 14, 2024, alumni and guests came together to support the life-changing work of the Yerbury Lab. This pre-game event featured researchers from the University of Wollongong (UOW) who appealed for community support to advance vital research aimed at tackling motor neuron disease.

Community Engagement for Research Awareness

The event coincided with the Hawks’ alumni round, drawing many former players and their families to the venue. Among the attendees was UOW Vice Chancellor Max Lu, who expressed his pride in the significant contributions being made in memory of the late Professor Justin Yerbury, a former player of the Hawks.

Editor Kathy Sharpe of the Illawarra Mercury underscored the importance of the campaign, stating, “Yes, research costs money, and while we are appealing to Hawks fans and the wider community to donate to the lab through the MND Research Fund, it’s also important for us to use our platform to create awareness.” She emphasized that many people are unaware of the groundbreaking research happening in Wollongong, which continues the momentum initiated by Professor Yerbury.

“The research has the potential to change people’s lives,” Sharpe added, highlighting the significance of the appeal during this special alumni event.

Building Momentum for a Cause

The Yerbury Lab is dedicated to advancing understanding of motor neuron disease, and the gathering aimed to foster support not just through financial contributions but also by raising awareness about the ongoing research. The community’s involvement is crucial in ensuring that this important work continues, as the lab seeks to make strides in a field that profoundly impacts many lives.

As the Hawks continue to build their momentum on the court, their commitment to supporting local research initiatives showcases a strong community bond that goes beyond sports. The event served as a reminder of the interconnectedness of health, research, and community support, inviting all to contribute to a cause that holds the promise of hope for many.

For those interested in supporting the Yerbury Lab, further information on how to contribute can be found through the MND Research Fund website.
