UPDATE: In a heartwarming return, former Perth Wildcats star Bryce Cotton received an emotional hero’s welcome from fans at RAC Arena as he faced his old team, now playing for the Adelaide 36ers. The stunning tribute unfolded just moments before the tip-off on October 27, 2023, during a thrilling matchup that captivated a record crowd of 13,661 fans.

Cotton, a five-time NBL MVP, was visibly moved as he jogged onto the court to a standing ovation. Fans erupted into chants of “MVP, MVP, MVP” as a specially prepared video tribute played on the big screen. “It caught me off guard hearing the cheers from the fans. The video was cool as well,” Cotton expressed, reflecting on the emotional atmosphere.

The anticipation had been immense for Cotton’s return to Perth after being away for nine months. Earlier in the season, he had faced the Wildcats in South Australia, but this was a homecoming like no other. The crowd’s overwhelming support was clear, as they chanted and cheered, creating an electrifying atmosphere that Cotton described as “really gratifying.”

During a nail-biting game, Cotton proved his worth on the court, scoring 21 points and providing 12 assists, leading Adelaide to a dramatic one-point victory. The Wildcats, initially ahead by 21 points in the third quarter, saw their lead evaporate as Cotton delivered crucial baskets in the closing moments. His celebration after the win highlighted the unique bond he shares with the Perth fans, despite now being an opponent.

“It was pretty cool to see the love that the fans showed. I definitely appreciated that,” Cotton remarked, acknowledging the duality of being both a beloved player and an adversary.

Throughout the game, fans wrestled with their emotions, transitioning from admiration to competitive spirit as Cotton began to dominate. “I had fun hearing the boos at the free throw line. Every time I scored, I would hear subtle claps. It was weird in a good way,” he noted, reflecting on the unique experience of being celebrated while playing against them.

Before the game, Cotton took time to connect with young fans, signing autographs and posing for pictures, ensuring he made a memorable impact. “Perth is always going to have a soft spot for me,” he said, emphasizing the lasting connection he holds with the city and its fans.

This unforgettable night not only showcased Cotton’s talent but also highlighted the deep emotional ties between athletes and their communities. The blend of nostalgia and competition made the game a significant event for both Cotton and the Perth Wildcats fans.

As the NBL season progresses, all eyes will remain on Cotton and the 36ers as they navigate the challenges ahead, with fans eagerly anticipating their next matchup.
