Career Changes Surge as Workers Seek New Skills in 2026

A significant shift in workforce dynamics is underway as research reveals that half of all workers are contemplating a career change within the next year. According to a survey conducted by recruitment firm Robert Half, 56 percent of employees in Australia are open to changing jobs if it enhances their lifestyle. This desire for career mobility is particularly pronounced among younger workers, with 62 percent of Gen Z respondents expressing a willingness to switch careers.

As we enter 2026, it is essential for those considering a career transition to adopt a strategic approach. Samuel Bohr, the National Courses Director at Robert Half, emphasizes the importance of understanding the skills that employers require for new roles. He notes, “Career change is often driven by lifestyle considerations, but success depends on understanding what employers are actually looking for.” The labour market is tightening, and having the relevant skills can significantly influence hiring decisions.

The latest employment data indicates that competition for available roles is intensifying, with a notable decrease in vacancies compared to the previous year. Bohr asserts that possessing current, recognized skills can be the distinguishing factor for candidates vying for the same position. In light of these developments, many workers are turning to short courses and targeted training to address skills gaps and meet employer expectations without committing to lengthy qualifications.

Growing Demand for Targeted Training

Areas experiencing heightened interest among job seekers include business and management, health and community services, technology, compliance, and trade-related training. This trend reflects a broader transformation within the labour market, where continuous upskilling is becoming a necessary component of long-term employability. “Workers are expected to adapt, reskill, and update their capabilities more frequently as industries evolve,” Bohr explains.

For individuals contemplating a job change in the near future, thorough research into role requirements is crucial. It is advisable to assess whether additional training or certification may be necessary to remain competitive in the evolving job landscape. As the workforce continues to adapt to changing demands, the emphasis on relevant skills will only grow stronger.

In summary, as 2026 approaches, the inclination among workers to pursue new careers is evident. The emphasis on acquiring specific skills will play a pivotal role in determining the success of those seeking to navigate this evolving job market.
