LNP Claims Historic By-Election Victory in Hinchinbrook

UPDATE: In a stunning political shift, the LNP has secured a historic victory in the Hinchinbrook by-election, marking the first time in nearly three decades that a state government has reclaimed a seat in such a contest. The results, confirmed by the Queensland Electoral Commission, reveal a significant 13 percent swing towards the LNP, signaling a major shift in voter sentiment.

Premier David Crisafulli celebrated the victory on July 15, 2025, as his ally Wayde Chiesa triumphed over KAP candidate Mark Molachino, securing 41.28 percent of the primary vote. This is projected to lead to a 54-46 percent victory in a two-candidate race, a monumental achievement for the party.

The LNP’s success comes as a huge vote of confidence for Crisafulli, particularly after a vigorous campaign aimed at addressing local issues and community concerns. “It’s been approaching 30 years since the government won a seat back at a by-election – so it is a big deal,” Crisafulli stated, acknowledging the historical significance of the win.

One Nation’s Luke Sleep garnered just over 13 percent of the primary vote, while Labor’s Maurie Soars could only manage 8 percent. This marks a striking decline for the Labor Party, with Crisafulli noting, “I’m not sure I’ve seen a Labor party vote in single digits, so that’s something for them to reflect on.”

The Hinchinbrook electorate, which spans approximately 6,500 square kilometers and includes Crisafulli’s hometown of Ingham, has deep personal significance for the Premier. He emphasized the emotional weight of the victory, stating, “Of course, it’s personal. I grew up here, I love this community, and I want the best for it.”

This by-election was necessitated by the resignation of KAP’s Nick Dametto, who recently won the Townsville mayoral race. The LNP’s ability to break the by-election trend, which typically sees swings against the governing party, suggests a potential shift in the political landscape of Queensland.

As the LNP prepares to build on this momentum, all eyes will be on Crisafulli’s next steps, particularly regarding his ongoing initiatives to tackle youth crime and other pressing issues facing the community. The victory not only enhances his standing within the party but also strengthens his position ahead of future elections.

This significant by-election win is poised to reshape the political dynamics in Queensland, making it a pivotal moment for the LNP and the local electorate. Expect immediate developments as the party capitalizes on this victory.
