UPDATE: Special Olympics Sydney South just wrapped up their annual charity golf day at Cronulla Golf Club on November 17, 2023, bringing together 100 participants, including five athletes, to champion inclusion through sport. The ambrose event took place under perfect weather conditions, making it a memorable day for all involved.

Club Chairperson Kathy Slade expressed gratitude, stating, “It was a fantastic day for both sponsors and players.” She emphasized the importance of community support, thanking major sponsor Stanton Collaborative, along with hole sponsors and the Cronulla Golf Club team. Their contributions directly benefit athletes, highlighting the mission of Special Olympics Sydney South, which has empowered individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism for 35 years.

The charity day showcased the organization’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles through eight sports across eleven weekly sessions. Volunteers and athletes celebrated every achievement, big or small, paving pathways for local competitions to the international stage.

Special Olympics athlete Carl O’Farrell, who clinched the longest drive in the athlete division, shared, “Helping my fellow athletes develop their golf skills is my biggest achievement.”

Feedback highlighted the excellent condition of the golf course and the outstanding service from the Cronulla Golf Club team, as reported by volunteer Peter Lyons.

Among the attendees were Special Olympics CEO Jamie O’Connor and federal MP for Cook Simon Kennedy, both of whom have shown strong support for the organization. Golf coordinator April O’Shea remarked, “Simon is a great supporter of Special Olympics Sydney South and engages with our athletes, promoting inclusion through the power of sport.”

The event underscores the need for ongoing community involvement, as Sydney South is actively seeking enthusiastic volunteers and sponsors to support their 184 athletes. Those interested in contributing can reach out to April O’Shea via email at [email protected].
