Sydney Kings Triumph 94-72 as Coach Goorjian Ejected Mid-Game

UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, Sydney Kings’ legendary coach Brian Goorjian was ejected from the game after receiving two technical fouls, yet the Kings secured a commanding 94-72 victory over the Perth Wildcats at Qudos Bank Arena on October 15, 2023.

This unexpected dismissal occurred during the third quarter after a heated exchange with a referee, who admonished Goorjian to “control your emotions here.” Following an alleged expletive from Goorjian, the officials confirmed the second technical foul, leaving the Kings leading 69-61 with just 1:22 remaining in the third period.

As tensions flared on the court, Kings’ star guard Matthew Dellavedova faced a controversial no-call on a charge against Kristian Doolittle. Nonetheless, Dellavedova quickly rebounded by sinking a crucial jump shot to end the quarter, propelling the Kings to maintain their lead through a tense finale.

With Goorjian ejected, veteran assistant Bill Tomlinson temporarily took over coaching duties before former star center Andrew Bogut stepped in to guide the team. The Kings improved their season record to 3-3, showing resilience despite Goorjian’s absence.

“We’re not playing our best ball. We’re still figuring it out,” Kendric Davis stated post-game. “This is a good step for us, but once we get clicking, we all know what we’re capable of.”

Davis was a standout with 25 points and five steals, while Xavier Cooks added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Dellavedova contributed 15 points and four assists.

On the opposing side, Wildcats coach John Rillie also faced a technical foul early in the fourth quarter but managed to maintain composure. His team lost key import Dylan Windler to injury before halftime, and both Jo Lual-Acuil and Lat Mayen fouled out late in the match. Despite the setbacks, Rillie’s son, Jaron Rillie, delivered a commendable performance with 16 points.

Sydney Kings surged ahead after trailing 15-22 at the end of the first quarter, dominating the second to lead 50-45 at halftime, largely due to Davis’ impressive scoring. The Kings extended their lead significantly in the closing moments, sealing the victory.

Both teams now prepare for a busy week ahead. The Kings will face South East Melbourne on Thursday away and Tasmania at home on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Wildcats are set to meet the Cairns Taipans on Wednesday away and the Illawarra Hawks at home on Saturday.

This thrilling matchup not only showcased the competitive spirit of the NBL but also highlighted the emotional stakes involved for both coaches and players as they navigate the ups and downs of the season.
