Urgent Closure: Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun Childcare Centers Shut Down

Ronald Houghton, 58, appeared in Albany Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with producing child exploitation material.

URGENT UPDATE: The Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun childcare centers were abruptly closed on Friday due to serious safety concerns for staff after a senior employee’s husband was charged with producing child abuse material. Parents were notified via email at 11:30 AM on November 10, 2023, about this immediate shutdown following community backlash.

Authorities confirmed that the closure is a precautionary measure due to “real or perceived threats to service staff” stemming from allegations published in the Albany Advertiser. The accused, Ronald Houghton, appeared in Albany Magistrates Court on November 6 facing two counts of producing child exploitation material and one count of possessing indecent articles. All charges are alleged to have occurred in Ravensthorpe this year.

Officials emphasized that there is “no risk to the children or the community,” and the allegations do not involve any current or former children at REED services. In a statement, the not-for-profit REED childcare centre expressed distress over the situation and announced that the employee, Evelyn Houghton, has been placed on administrative leave.

“Children’s safety is our highest priority…,” REED stated, adding that they are following all necessary policies to ensure safety.

The swift closure has prompted parents to express their concerns, with many withdrawing their children from the daycare until further information is available. One mother described the situation as “absolute chaos for those of us who have pulled our kids,” highlighting the impact on working families. “It’s a nightmare,” she added.

In response to the community’s anxiety, REED chair Wendy Newman stated that the organization will not make further comments while respecting the due process of law. “We have and will continue to communicate directly with parents and the community,” she affirmed.

The Shire of Ravensthorpe also released a statement expressing devastation over the allegations against a former employee’s husband and reassured the community that there is no immediate concern following discussions with local police. “We fully understand families may be worried after hearing this news,” the statement read.

Both childcare centers are scheduled to reopen on Monday, November 13, 2023. Meanwhile, Mr. Houghton’s next court appearance is set for January 22, 2024, after an adjournment to seek legal advice.

As this situation develops, parents and community members are urged to stay informed. REED has committed to providing updates as more information becomes available, ensuring that the safety and well-being of children and staff remain their top priority.
