Urgent Update: Bendigo Detective Killed in Porepunkah Shooting

UPDATE: A tragic shooting incident at Porepunkah has claimed the lives of two police officers, including Bendigo-raised Detective Leading Senior Constable Thompson, just days before his planned retirement. The devastating news broke on August 26, 2023, as tributes poured in for the fallen officers, with flowers and heartfelt messages filling the Wangaratta police station.

Detective Thompson, who had dedicated 38 years to the force, was on the brink of retirement when he was killed in the line of duty. Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, a newer officer who joined the police academy in 2018, also lost his life during the harrowing incident. A third officer sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

In an emotional tribute, Thompson’s cousin, Peter, expressed his pride, saying, “He was a legend. He was just doing his job.” The cousin described Thompson as a dedicated officer who grew up with a passion for hunting and fishing in the Bendigo region. “Let’s just hope they get this fella and the community can sleep peacefully,” he added, referencing the ongoing search for the shooter.

Deputy Chief Commissioner Russell Barrett spoke on the profound impact of this tragedy, stating, “Every member of Victoria Police can put themselves in the shoes of our fallen colleagues and appreciate the risks they face. It’s devastating.”

Retired Wodonga detective Graeme Simpfendorfer shared his heartbreak on social media, calling Thompson a “genuinely good man” who was deeply committed to his community. “To see his life taken so tragically leaves a hole that cannot be filled,” he stated.

In a show of solidarity, landmarks across the region have been illuminated in blue, and police stations throughout Victoria are being adorned with flowers as the community mourns the loss of these two heroes.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooter’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers while the community rallies to support the families affected by this tragedy.

This incident not only highlights the inherent dangers faced by officers daily but also the profound impact on their families and communities. As investigations continue, many are left grappling with the loss of dedicated public servants who paid the ultimate price while serving and protecting their community.
