Wegmans Recalls Locatelli Cheese Over Listeria Contamination Risk

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. has initiated an urgent recall of its Locatelli grated Pecorino Romano cheese due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This action, taken on November 26, 2025, comes after the company was alerted by its supplier regarding possible contamination risks. Consumers are strongly advised to discard the affected product immediately.

The recall affects cheese sold at Wegmans locations throughout several states including Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. This specific product was on sale between November 14 and November 24, 2025.

Health Risks Associated with Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can lead to severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In otherwise healthy individuals, Listeria may cause symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, or gastrointestinal issues. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, as infections can result in miscarriage or stillbirth.

While no illnesses have been reported in connection with this specific recall, Wegmans has emphasized the importance of consumer safety and is proactively addressing potential risks.

The recalled item is identifiable as Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese with a UPC code of 2-77580-XXXXX-7, where the last four digits vary based on the product’s weight. All lot codes of this cheese have been recalled and removed from store shelves.

Consumer Guidance and Refund Process

Customers who purchased the affected cheese are encouraged to return it to any Wegmans location for a full refund. Alternatively, consumers may choose to discard the product.

For further inquiries about the recall, Wegmans has established a helpline at 1-855-934-3663. The service hours for the helpline are as follows:
