As children in West Australia return to school, a recent survey conducted by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) highlights significant traffic concerns in school zones. The findings reveal that drivers are increasingly frustrated by heavy congestion, illegal parking, and distracted pedestrians.
The RAC school traffic survey involved responses from 726 individuals, with nearly half reporting that heavy traffic during drop-off and pick-up times is a daily occurrence. Specifically, 49 percent of surveyed drivers noted they encounter congestion regularly, while the same percentage observed illegal parking. Additionally, 37 percent experienced delays due to impatient drivers, and 36 percent reported seeing pedestrians distracted by mobile phones.
Drivers also expressed concerns about other unsafe behaviors. Many respondents indicated they frequently witness motorists neglecting to use indicators, tailgating, and parking too closely to other vehicles. Significantly, a third of participants stated they see speeding in school zones on a daily basis.
In light of these findings, Will Golsby, the RAC’s external relations general manager, emphasized the need for heightened awareness among all road users during peak school traffic times. He stated, “School traffic is busy and often chaotic, so we’re urging parents and caregivers to follow the rules, drive at the speed limit, be courteous to other drivers and watch out for pedestrians.”
Golsby also suggested that families consider alternative modes of transportation to alleviate traffic congestion. “With congestion a top daily gripe, it’s always worth considering if walking, cycling or catching public transport are viable options to avoid school traffic frustrations,” he added.
The RAC appreciates the WA Government’s recent initiative to make public transport free for students, which is expected to encourage more families to utilize public transit. Furthermore, the RAC continues to advocate for improved infrastructure to support active travel, making it easier for children and their parents to walk or cycle to school safely.
The findings of the RAC survey underscore the pressing need for awareness and action from both drivers and policymakers to enhance safety in school zones. Addressing these concerns is critical to ensuring that students can navigate their journeys to and from school safely and without unnecessary stress.
