More than 20 individuals participated in the Vinnies Community Sleepout at Charles Sturt University on August 29, 2023, trading their warm beds for a night under the stars to raise funds for homelessness. The event has already garnered nearly $13,000 in donations, with opportunities for further contributions still available.
Among the participants was business owner Rebecca O’Brien, who described the chilly conditions as a small price to pay for a noble cause. “It was chilly and windy, but such a great night,” she remarked. The evening featured various activities aimed at keeping spirits high, including trivia, auctions, chocolates, card games, and late-night conversations.
After the rain subsided, participants set up their sleeping arrangements around 22:00. They sought refuge under awnings to shield themselves from the wind, using cardboard beneath their sleeping bags to provide additional warmth. O’Brien noted her involvement with a special item: a Ruffy Swag, which she helped produce for Carevan and Uniting. “These swags are given to people experiencing homelessness,” she explained.
The Vinnies Community Sleepout serves not only as a fundraising initiative but also as a platform for participants to gain insight into the hardships faced by those without stable housing. O’Brien emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “What made the event more special was the selfless people who wanted to give back.”
Organiser Lincoln Weir expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. “We’re super proud of everyone and the community support,” he said, reflecting on the event’s success and the collective effort to address homelessness.
As the need for awareness and action surrounding homelessness continues to grow, events like the Vinnies Community Sleepout play a crucial role in raising both funds and consciousness.
