More than 20 individuals participated in the Vinnies Community Sleepout on August 29, 2023, at Charles Sturt University, raising nearly $13,000 for homelessness. This event aimed to create awareness about the challenges faced by those experiencing unstable housing while also generating crucial funds to support related initiatives.
Participants braved the cold temperatures, with business owner Rebecca O’Brien describing the experience as both challenging and rewarding. “It was chilly and windy, but such a great night,” O’Brien recounted. The evening included various activities such as trivia, auctions, and card games, which helped maintain a lively atmosphere despite the elements.
The group set up their sleeping arrangements around 10 PM, taking shelter under awnings to protect against the wind. O’Brien shared her experience of using a Ruffy Swag, a portable sleeping solution designed for those without homes. “I was lucky enough to test out a Ruffy Swag, which I helped produce for Carevan and Uniting. These swags are given to people experiencing homelessness,” she explained.
Community Support and Awareness
O’Brien emphasized the event’s significance, highlighting the selfless nature of participants who sought to give back to the community. “While homelessness remains a pressing issue, events like the Vinnies Community Sleepout not only raise vital funds but also provide participants with a firsthand glimpse into the challenges faced by people without stable housing,” she noted.
Organiser Lincoln Weir expressed gratitude for the community’s support and participation. “We’re super proud of everyone and the community support,” he stated. The funds raised will be instrumental in financing programs that assist individuals experiencing homelessness.
As the night progressed, the camaraderie among participants grew stronger, with laughter and conversation filling the air. The event served as a reminder of the ongoing issue of homelessness and the collective efforts needed to address it.
To contribute to this initiative and support the cause, donations are still being accepted. Interested individuals can visit the Vinnies Community Sleepout website for more information.
