Russia has successfully tested its nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, a development that President Vladimir Putin claims can evade all current and future missile defense systems. The test occurred on October 21, 2023, with Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of Russia’s Armed Forces, reporting that the missile traveled approximately 14,000 kilometers and remained airborne for about 15 hours.
According to Russian officials, the 9M730 Burevestnik, known as the SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO, is touted as “invincible” against missile defenses. It features an almost limitless range and an unpredictable flight path, making it a significant addition to Russia’s military capabilities. During a meeting with military leaders in a command point setting, Putin emphasized the uniqueness of the Burevestnik, stating, “It is a unique weapon which nobody else in the world has.”
Putin reflected on the challenges faced during the weapon’s development, noting that some Russian specialists had previously doubted its feasibility. He announced that the “crucial testing” phase has now been completed and directed Gerasimov to begin preparations for the missile’s classification and deployment infrastructure.
Gerasimov confirmed that the missile successfully operated on nuclear power during the test, highlighting its long-range capability as a key differentiator. He asserted that the Burevestnik could outmaneuver any anti-missile defenses currently in existence.
In a related military exercise, Putin oversaw a test of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces, which included land, sea, and air components, to demonstrate their readiness and command structure. “The so-called modernity of our nuclear deterrence forces is at the highest level,” he stated, asserting that Russia’s capabilities surpass those of any other nuclear power.
Data from the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) indicates that Russia and the United States together hold approximately 87 percent of the world’s nuclear arsenal, with Russia possessing 5,459 nuclear warheads and the US holding 5,177. “The strategic forces are capable of ensuring the national security of the Russian Federation and the Union State in full,” Putin declared, underscoring the importance of these developments for Russia’s defense posture.
The successful test of the Burevestnik missile represents a significant milestone in Russia’s military advancements and adds complexity to global security dynamics. As nations monitor these developments closely, the implications for international relations and arms control efforts may be profound.
