Australia will have a strong representation in the upcoming major tennis tournament, with a total of 21 players—11 men and 10 women—qualifying for the main draw. This includes four players who secured their spots through qualifying matches, highlighting the depth of Australian talent on the international stage.
Jason Kubler advanced after a hard-fought match against Germany’s Alexander Blockx. After dropping the first set, Kubler rallied back to take the second before Blockx retired while trailing 3-6, 6-3, 1-0. This marks Kubler’s first appearance in the main draw since 2024, and he faces a challenging first-round encounter against world No. 29 Francis Tiafoe. Should he win, Kubler could potentially meet fellow Australian Alex de Minaur in the third round.
In another notable match, Jaimee Fourlis secured her place in the main draw by overcoming Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Fourlis also faced difficulties in previous qualification attempts but has now earned a chance to compete against compatriot Kimberly Birrell in the opening round.
Aleksandar Sweeny delivered an impressive performance against Italy’s Stefano Travaglia, winning both sets in tiebreaks, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3). This marks Sweeny’s second appearance in the Open, following his participation in 2024. He will face the experienced French player Gael Monfils in the first round. After his victory, an emotional Sweeny reflected on his journey, expressing disbelief at his achievements: “I just feel so incredibly grateful to be able to be in this position, and I’m proud of myself for digging in there when it was really tough.”
The 24-year-old, who stands at 170 cm and weighs only 63 kg, showcased his agility on the court, often diving for shots despite appearing to injure his wrist during one exchange. Notably, Sweeny made a first-round exit in his only previous major tournament appearance, but his current ranking of No. 182 underscores his determination to succeed.
In women’s singles, Ellen Perez also made headlines by defeating American Taylor Townsend with a score of 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Perez, a former doubles world No. 1, will take on Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in her first match of the tournament. Perez’s performance in the qualifying rounds mirrors her previous success in 2024, where she advanced to the third round after securing her place through qualifying.
As the tournament approaches, the excitement surrounding the Australian contingent builds. With their mix of experience and emerging talent, these players aim to make significant strides in the competition, showcasing their skills on a global stage. The Open is set to begin soon, and all eyes will be on these Australians as they vie for glory.
