Brisbane Lions Face Key Injury Setbacks Ahead of Finals

Brisbane Lions forward Eric Hipwood will miss the beginning of the club’s finals campaign due to a calf injury. This setback comes just as the Lions prepare to compete in the finals, following a significant 57-point victory over Fremantle on Friday night.

Hipwood is expected to be sidelined for approximately three to four weeks, having sustained the injury during the match. This timing means he may not return until the preliminary final weekend, should the team progress. Although he had a quiet game against Fremantle, finishing with only three disposals and no goals, Hipwood has contributed significantly to Brisbane’s season with 25 goals to his name.

The injury is particularly disappointing for Hipwood, as he was set to mark his 200th AFL match this weekend against Hawthorn at the Gabba. His absence will be felt as the Lions strive to solidify their position in the finals.

In more encouraging news for Brisbane, midfielder Jarrod Berry is an outside chance to play against Hawthorn despite dislocating his left shoulder in the same match. Scans have ruled out any serious damage, offering hope for his quick recovery.

Brisbane is also set to welcome back forward Kai Lohmann, who has been nursing a calf injury. However, the Lions will be without two-time Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale, who is expected to miss one more match due to a quad injury. Additionally, players including Jack Payne (knee), Noah Answerth (Achilles), Lincoln McCarthy (knee), and Keidean Coleman (quad) have been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Across the league, Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin will also miss the final round clash against Geelong on Saturday after suffering what is believed to be a broken leg. Vlastuin sustained the injury following a fall during Richmond’s 48-point loss to North Melbourne on Sunday. Despite the injury, he remains a strong contender for Richmond’s best and fairest award this year, and his impressive form could secure him a place in the All-Australian team.

As the finals approach, the Lions will be keen to navigate these injury hurdles and maintain their momentum in the competition.
