BREAKING: Over 1,000 people descended on the Caringbah Rotary Markets today to celebrate a remarkable 40th anniversary under sunny skies. This milestone event marks a significant community gathering, drawing families and local businesses together for a day filled with festivities and nostalgia.
The Caringbah Markets, held on the last Sunday of each month, originated at the Caringbah Skyline Drive-In, where the Bunnings now stands. As the site faced redevelopment, the markets relocated to the Safeway supermarket site on Kingsway, now known as the Woolworths-anchored Caringbah Shopping Village. Approximately 30 years ago, they moved again to the council car park behind McDonald’s and Coles, adapting to the evolving local landscape.
Since their inception, the Rotary Club of Caringbah has raised over $3 million for various local and international charities. Today, attendees could see 40 projects displayed on a large sign, highlighting the profound impact of the markets over four decades.
Cathy Mason, a long-time organizer who met her husband Richard through a Rotary youth leadership program, expressed pride in continuing her father John Chaenhall’s legacy. “It’s a nice family tradition to continue,” Cathy remarked. “We have a great team, everyone gets involved.”
The markets stand out as the only regular venues in the Sutherland Shire for selling second-hand household goods and clothing, promoting recycling and supporting small businesses. “A lot of small businesses test products here,” Cathy noted, highlighting the markets as a launchpad for aspiring entrepreneurs. Young stallholders like Maddie Bluck, who runs a baking business called Madelicious, showcased their creations to the enthusiastic crowd.
The special anniversary celebration included live entertainment from local performers, a Menai High Petting Farm, and various children’s activities like Pass the Ball. Attendees were treated to giveaways and a competitive Sausage Sandwich Eating Competition. The first 100 arrivals after 9 AM enjoyed complimentary Rotary Sausage Sandwiches, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Typically, the markets attract between 800 to 1,000 visitors, with casual stallholders paying $60 for a site, plus additional costs for public liability insurance. Permanent stallholders pay $50, providing an affordable platform for local vendors.
As the day unfolds, the Caringbah Rotary Markets continue to foster community spirit, entrepreneurship, and charitable giving. This annual event not only celebrates its rich history but also sets the stage for future growth and involvement from the local community.
Stay tuned for updates as the markets run until 1 PM today, providing a vibrant hub for locals to gather, shop, and enjoy a slice of Caringbah’s heritage.
