Lachie Neale to Return for AFL Grand Final, Defying Injury Odds

UPDATE: Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale will make a stunning comeback for the AFL Grand Final 2025 against Geelong, just 22 days after suffering a calf injury during the qualifying final. Neale, a two-time Brownlow Medal winner, declared himself fit to play, despite initial scans suggesting he could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Neale expressed his determination to prove skeptics wrong, stating, “I look like a bit of a goose,” referring to a previous social media post where he indicated his season was over. “It’s been a little bit of a roller-coaster, emotionally,” he added. His return energizes the Lions, who are eager for their first premiership in 20 years.

The 32-year-old participated minimally during the Lions’ captain’s run at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday but has shown remarkable progress in his recovery. After successful training sessions on Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday, Neale has proven his fitness, replacing injured teammate Jarrod Berry in the lineup.

Neale, a four-time All-Australian, might also take on the role of substitute, a position he last played in the 2013 Grand Final with Fremantle. His experience could be crucial as the Lions aim to overcome a formidable Cats side.

Lions coach Chris Fagan and Neale left the possibility open for a last-minute adjustment, noting that the team dynamics could shift based on game day needs. Neale acknowledged the support from his teammates, stating, “We have 22 other pretty good stories that hopefully get a run over the next couple of days.”

Berry’s selfless decision to withdraw highlights the team-first mentality within the Lions. Co-captain Harris Andrews praised Berry’s commitment, calling him “a great team man” for prioritizing the team’s success over personal ambitions.

This year’s grand final not only represents a pivotal moment for Neale but also for the entire Brisbane Lions organization, as they chase glory on the grandest stage. Fans are buzzing with anticipation as the game approaches.

Tune into the AFL Grand Final on October 7, 2025, as the Lions look to upset the Cats and secure their championship title. The excitement is palpable with Neale’s unexpected return, making this match one of the most anticipated events in recent history. Fans are encouraged to follow the updates closely as the teams prepare for battle.
