Melton City Council’s Initiative Wins Award for Ending Homelessness

UPDATE: Melton City Council has just been awarded for its groundbreaking efforts in tackling homelessness, winning the prestigious Excellence in Ending Homelessness – Adult Category at the 2025 Victorian Homelessness Achievement Awards in Ballarat last week. This recognition highlights the urgent need for effective solutions to homelessness in Victoria.

The Rough Sleeper Initiative, a collaborative project launched by the council two years ago in partnership with Melbourne City Mission and IPC Health, addresses the alarming rise in individuals sleeping rough in the City of Melton. The award, presented by the Council to Homeless Persons, Victoria, celebrates initiatives that make a remarkable impact on preventing and ending homelessness for adults.

Mayor Cr Lara Carli emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “What makes this program unique is that it brings support to people when and where they need it, rather than the other way around.” The initiative prioritizes dignity, empowerment, and inclusion, moving away from a traditional “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Since its inception, the program has received 255 notifications regarding individuals sleeping rough, with most reports coming from community members and local businesses. Upon receiving a notification, the council coordinates with partner agencies for on-site assessments and immediate support, including food, healthcare referrals, and pathways to safe housing options like public and community housing.

“This vital work showcases the power of collaboration between local government and community organizations to support our most vulnerable residents,” Cr Carli added. The program has made significant strides in addressing homelessness in the region, further solidifying its role as a model for other communities.

Additionally, the initiative was acknowledged earlier this year in May 2025 at the Vision Super Local Government Awards, winning the Local Heroes Award.

As the situation for homeless individuals remains critical, the success of the Rough Sleeper Initiative serves as a beacon of hope. Authorities are now looking to expand the program’s reach and effectiveness to continue providing essential support to those in need.

Stay tuned for more updates as Melton City Council continues its mission to combat homelessness and improve the lives of its residents.
