UPDATE: A 52-year-old man has been charged after a dramatic attempt to steal an ATM using a stolen forklift in Perth. The incident unfolded at Centuria Northlands shopping centre where the suspect allegedly drove through the complex, causing significant damage on February 16, 2026.
Authorities from the Mirrabooka and Joondalup police districts announced the arrest after linking the man to multiple theft incidents in Balcatta and Greenwood earlier this month. Detectives began their investigation following a break-in at a shopping centre on Calectasia Street on February 11, where he reportedly used power tools to access an ATM and stole a large sum of money.
Just five days later, the man stole a forklift from a Balcatta business and drove it to the shopping centre on Wanneroo Road. During this audacious theft, he attempted to remove an ATM but was ultimately unsuccessful, leaving behind substantial damage to both the machine and the centre.
Detectives worked collaboratively, quickly identifying the suspect as being responsible for both incidents. A search warrant executed at a residence in Alexander Heights led to his arrest. Authorities discovered an allegedly stolen truck, drugs, and cash at the property.
A spokesperson for WA Police stated, “Further inquiries identified the truck had been stolen from a business in Balcatta in early January 2026 and had been used in a series of commercial burglary offences.”
The man now faces over a dozen charges, including drug possession, aggravated burglary, and theft. WA Police Metropolitan Assistant Commissioner Martin Haime commended the detectives for their effective teamwork, stating, “If you choose to offend, understand this clearly: our squads work together, we share intelligence, and we will find you. If you target our community, expect to be caught.”
The arrest highlights the urgent need for community vigilance as police ramp up efforts to combat such brazen crimes. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as investigations continue. This incident serves as a reminder that law enforcement is actively pursuing those who threaten public safety.
