UPDATE: The West Coast Eagles have made a significant move in the AFLW draft, selecting Mia Russo with their first pick at No. 20 after a surprising slide down the draft board. This decision highlights the Eagles’ commitment to nurturing local talent from Western Australia.
Originally slated to pick at No. 12, West Coast was pushed back eight spots due to matched bids on academy-tied players, allowing the first eleven selections to be dominated by other teams. When their opportunity finally arrived, the Eagles seized the chance to secure Russo, a standout midfielder recognized for her exceptional performance at the under-18 national championships, where she earned a spot on the All Australian team.
At just 18 years old, Russo has already made a name for herself in the sport, previously winning the Most Valuable Player award at the under-16 national championships. In a statement reflecting her aspirations, she noted her admiration for fellow WA product, Patrick Cripps, captain of Carlton and a two-time Brownlow medallist. “I’ve always tried to be like him. I’d like to be the type of player he is as a leader and the way he can change a game,” Russo remarked.
In addition to Russo, the Eagles hold the No. 36 pick in the draft, acquired through a deal involving Lily Paterson, a junior from Swan Districts, and Lucy Boyd, who will be heading to the Power. Meanwhile, the Fremantle Dockers are set to make their selections at pick No. 35, 40, and 45, as they recently re-signed six players, leaving three slots open on their roster.
The excitement surrounding the draft continues as teams finalize their rosters and fans eagerly anticipate the impact of these new players. Stay tuned for further updates as the AFLW draft unfolds.
