Wilcannia Honors Heroes on Remembrance Day with Emotional Service

UPDATE: A poignant Remembrance Day service took place in Wilcannia today, November 11, 2025, honoring the sacrifice of local heroes. The gathering, held at the War Memorial, was marked by emotional tributes as community members paid respect to the 21 men from Wilcannia and District who lost their lives in World War I.

The ceremony, commencing at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, featured a touching moment as students Myla and Zhayle from Central School read the poem “In Flanders Fields.” Their heartfelt recitation echoed the somber tone of the day, reminding attendees of the sacrifices made by young soldiers like Christie Walter Allison Jones, who was just 18 years old when he perished in the trenches of the Somme in November 1916. His body was never recovered.

Wilcannia Police Inspector Barry Roberts laid a wreath to honor those lost in the Great War, while Sergeant Shawn Tilley paid tribute to the horses that served alongside the troops by laying a sheaf of oats. The ceremony also featured the symbolic shower of jacaranda flowers from one of the last remaining trees planted in memory of the fallen.

Organizers expressed gratitude to Sister Elizabeth Young for leading the prayers and to local police for their assistance with logistical challenges, including a broken flagpole. Community members and local schools were recognized for their contributions to the event, emphasizing the spirit of unity and remembrance.

This year’s service not only commemorated the past but also reinforced the importance of remembering those who sacrificed everything for their country. As the community came together, the emotional weight of the day was felt by all in attendance.

The impact of these commemorative events resonates far beyond Wilcannia, serving as a reminder of the enduring legacy of sacrifice and courage.

As the day concludes, the community reflects on the importance of remembrance and the stories that connect them to their history. Keep an eye on local news for more updates on how Wilcannia continues to honor its heroes and preserve its rich history.
