Zelenskiy Announces Major Shakeup in Ukraine’s Security Leadership

BREAKING: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has just announced a significant leadership change within the country’s security apparatus, confirming plans to replace the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Vasyl Maliuk. This reshuffle comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing conflicts.

In a statement made on January 5, 2026, Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to Maliuk for his service and indicated that he would be shifting focus towards combat operations, stating, “There must be more Ukrainian asymmetric operations against the occupier and the Russian state, and more solid results in eliminating the enemy.” This decision highlights a continued commitment to intensify Ukraine’s military efforts against Russian forces.

Maliuk, who has held the SBU leadership role since February 2023, has been credited with overseeing several high-profile operations, including a daring drone strike on Russian strategic bombers stationed far from Ukrainian borders. Under his leadership, the SBU also executed a successful strike on a Russian submarine and several attacks on the critical bridge connecting Russia to occupied Crimea, which is vital for Russian logistics.

In response to his resignation, Maliuk confirmed via Telegram that he would remain involved with the SBU to focus on “world-class asymmetric special operations.” Analysts have praised his tenure, particularly in improving the effectiveness of the SBU following the dismissal of his predecessor, Ivan Bakanov, in July 2022, due to failures in addressing Russian infiltration.

This leadership transition is occurring alongside other significant appointments. Zelenskiy has named Kyrylo Budanov, the military intelligence chief, as his new chief of staff. Additionally, Mykhailo Fedorov, currently the deputy head of government and minister for digital transformation, will take over the defense portfolio from Denys Shmyhal, who will shift to the role of energy minister. These appointments are pending confirmation by Parliament.

The developments signal an urgent push by the Ukrainian government to adapt its military strategy and bolster national security in the face of ongoing threats. As tensions escalate, the focus on asymmetric warfare tactics reflects a strategic pivot aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s operational capabilities against Russian aggression.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds, including reactions from the international community and the implications of these changes for Ukraine’s defense strategy.
