Trump Pressures Zelensky to Accept Putin’s Terms in Tense Meeting

In a heated meeting at the White House, Donald Trump urged Volodymyr Zelensky to accept Russia’s terms for ending the conflict in Ukraine, warning that Vladimir Putin threatened to “destroy” Ukraine if an agreement was not reached. The exchange, described by sources as a “shouting match,” revealed the complexities of U.S.-Ukraine relations amid ongoing hostilities.

During the meeting, which took place on March 15, 2024, Trump reportedly dismissed frontline maps of Ukraine, expressing frustration over the ongoing situation. He allegedly echoed points made by Putin in a previous conversation, suggesting that Zelensky needed to negotiate or face dire consequences. One European official present described Trump’s demeanor as combative, noting that he frequently repeated Russian narratives about the conflict.

The meeting occurred as Zelensky and his team sought to persuade Trump to provide long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, a request that was ultimately declined. This refusal echoed sentiments from earlier discussions where Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Zelensky’s perceived lack of appreciation for U.S. support.

Trump’s alignment with Putin’s rhetoric alarmed many European allies, who had hoped for a stronger commitment from the U.S. to support Ukraine. The U.S. president’s comments during the meeting reportedly included assertions that Russia’s economy was thriving, contradicting his earlier statements advocating for negotiations based on economic pressures on Russia.

European officials briefed on the meeting emphasized that Trump told Zelensky he was “losing the war,” and warned of the potential for destruction if negotiations were not pursued. “If [Putin] wants it, he will destroy you,” Trump reportedly stated, reinforcing the stark nature of the encounter.

The backdrop to this meeting included a new Russian proposal presented to Trump, which suggested that Ukraine would surrender control of parts of the eastern Donbas region in exchange for limited territory in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. This offer marks a slight concession from previous negotiations but remains unacceptable to Ukraine, which views ceding territory as tantamount to capitulation.

Ukrainian parliament official Oleksandr Merezhko remarked that giving up the Donbas without resistance is “unacceptable for Ukrainian society.” He suggested that Putin’s strategy might aim to sow division within Ukraine, undermining national unity.

Following the meeting, Zelensky expressed concerns about the need for decisive action from the U.S. and European allies to effectively end the war. He underscored the urgency of collaborative efforts from nations within the G20 and G7 to address the ongoing crisis.

As the situation continues to evolve, the implications of Trump’s remarks and the shifting dynamics of U.S. support for Ukraine remain a critical focus for both Ukrainian officials and European leaders. The tension of the meeting has prompted a sense of pragmatism among European allies regarding future strategies, as they assess the best path forward in the face of Russian aggression.
