A 70-year-old woman tragically died after riding the Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, last year. According to a report released by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, she became unresponsive while on the ride on November 25, 2022, and later died at a nearby hospital. Her identity has not been disclosed.
The incident was included in a quarterly report on theme park injuries, which highlighted that the information reflects what was available at the time of the incident. The report does not provide further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the medical episode that led to the woman’s death.
Previous Medical Incidents
Since its opening in 2004, the Revenge of the Mummy coaster has been associated with 21 reported medical incidents, as noted by local news outlet WFLA. These incidents have varied in severity, ranging from nausea and dizziness to more serious concerns, including a reported seizure and a vertebra fracture. The report does not clarify whether any pre-existing health conditions contributed to the woman’s death.
While fatalities related to theme park rides are uncommon, they do occur. In the months leading up to the November incident, two other deaths were reported at amusement parks in the United States. In October 2022, a woman in her 60s died after experiencing a medical emergency while riding the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland in California. Additionally, in September 2022, a 32-year-old man died after riding the Stardust Racers at Universal’s Epic Universe in Florida.
The circumstances of these incidents raise questions about safety protocols and emergency response measures within theme parks. As investigations continue, officials emphasize the importance of understanding the potential risks associated with thrill rides.
For now, the focus remains on the tragedy of the lost life and the impact it has on the family and the community. As theme parks strive to provide thrilling experiences, ensuring the safety of their guests remains paramount.
