Scotland Triumphs with 56-0 Victory Over Tonga at Murrayfield

Scotland delivered a commanding performance on November 5, 2023, securing a resounding 56-0 victory against Tonga at Murrayfield Stadium. The match was marked by a series of disciplinary issues for Tonga, resulting in four yellow cards, one of which was escalated to a red card after a review. This overwhelming advantage allowed Scotland to dominate the game, scoring eight tries.

Tonga’s troubles began early in the match when flanker Semisi Paea received a yellow card in the sixth minute for a dangerous clear-out. After a review, his punishment was upgraded to a red card, forcing Tonga to play with a numerical disadvantage for the remainder of the match. The team struggled to maintain a full complement of players throughout the game, which severely hindered their performance.

Scotland capitalized on Tonga’s misfortunes with tries from captain Sione Tuipulotu, Jamie Ritchie, and George Turner. The scoring continued with Duhan van der Merwe adding to his record, achieving his 35th try for the national team. This remarkable feat places him ahead of fellow winger Darcy Graham as Scotland’s all-time leading try-scorer.

Tonga’s second yellow card came in the 48th minute when winger Taniela Filimone was penalized for a deliberate knock-on, followed by centre Fine Inisi receiving a yellow card for the same infraction in the 58th minute. These penalties compounded Tonga’s struggles on the pitch, as they found themselves increasingly outmatched.

It wasn’t until the 60th minute that Scotland secured their fourth try, with van der Merwe making a powerful run through the midfield. The team’s scoring did not end there; Ewan Ashman and George Horne each contributed two tries to the scoreline. Horne also added three conversions, while Fergus Burke successfully converted five of Scotland’s tries, showcasing the team’s offensive prowess.

This victory capped off Scotland’s autumn series, which included defensive shut-outs against both the United States and Tonga, sandwiching losses to New Zealand and Argentina. The impressive win is a testament to Scotland’s potential as they move forward in their international campaigns.
