The Radical Hope Machine 2 has officially opened in Caloundra, providing an innovative platform for the local community to explore imaginative futures through storytelling and creativity. Hosted at the new Library+, this immersive installation presents a unique experience where visitors can engage with a world where the Radical Hope Machine has crash-landed, blending cutting-edge technology with everyday objects.
Inside this captivating exhibition, a variety of elements come together to form a rich narrative tapestry. Visitors will encounter magical clothing, audio storytelling, and sculptural designs that reveal local stories hidden among the library’s bookshelves. This project, co-created with the Sunshine Coast community, seeks to highlight moments of cultural significance through the themes of hope, curiosity, and imagination.
Workshops Foster Community Engagement
A series of free workshops in March invites participants of all ages and skill levels to contribute their voices to the project. One highlight is the Emerging Writers Program, offering aspiring and early-career writers an opportunity to develop new work alongside acclaimed author Peter Carnavas. Selected stories from this program will be recorded and incorporated into the final installation, showcasing local talent during the Horizon Festival 2026.
The Everybody Workshop encourages spontaneity, allowing participants to drop in and experiment with words, recording super-short stories on the spot in Library+’s digital makerspace. Additionally, the Collage Workshop, led by artist Sarah Winters, invites community members to create bold cardboard forms that will be transformed into larger-than-life sculptures for the exhibition.
These workshops aim to ensure that the Radical Hope Machine 2 reflects the diverse creativity and collective imagination of the Sunshine Coast community. All workshops are free, but spaces are limited.
For more information on the workshops and to register, visit the Sunshine Coast Libraries website at www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/whats-on/radical-hope-machine-2. The Radical Hope Machine 2 initiative not only enhances cultural engagement but also fosters a sense of connection among residents through shared experiences and stories.
