Idrissa Gueye Sent Off After Slapping Teammate in Early Clash

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was shown a red card just 13 minutes into the Premier League match against Manchester United on March 4, 2024, after an altercation with teammate Michael Keane. The incident unfolded at Old Trafford during the first half when Gueye struck Keane in the face following a heated exchange triggered by a misplaced pass that nearly led to a scoring opportunity for Bruno Fernandes.

Referee Tony Harrington issued the red card for violent conduct, a decision that was corroborated by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The Premier League Match Centre confirmed that Gueye’s action constituted a clear strike to the face of Keane. Following the incident, Gueye had to be restrained by teammates Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye as he attempted to continue the argument.

This early dismissal forced Everton manager David Moyes to make an immediate tactical adjustment, which came just three minutes after Seamus Coleman had to leave the pitch due to injury. The team had already faced setbacks before the match, making Gueye’s red card particularly detrimental.

On-field disagreements between teammates are not unprecedented in football. In a notable incident from 2005, Newcastle players Lee Bowyer and Kieran Dyer clashed during a Premier League match against Aston Villa, resulting in both receiving red cards. Similarly, David Batty and Graeme Le Saux of Blackburn Rovers were involved in a notorious confrontation during a Champions League encounter with Spartak Moscow in 1995.

The repercussions of Gueye’s actions will likely be felt beyond this match, as Everton will need to reassess their strategy moving forward in the Premier League. The team’s ability to recover from setbacks will be crucial as they navigate the remainder of the season.
