On February 16, 2026, the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, experienced a significant outage that affected access for over 40,000 users worldwide. The disruption began shortly after 8 a.m. ET, coinciding with Presidents’ Day, a federal holiday in the United States, when many users typically engage more with social media.
Reports of issues surged rapidly, with users unable to load feeds, refresh timelines, or log in to both the mobile app and the desktop website. According to Downdetector, which tracks user-reported outages, complaints rose sharply from baseline levels to over 40,000 by approximately 8:45 a.m. ET. Peak figures reached between 42,000 and 43,000 during certain tracking periods.
Issues were most prevalent in the United States, particularly in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. However, reports also came in from the United Kingdom, India, Nigeria, Canada, Australia, and other regions, indicating a broader global disruption.
According to Downdetector, about 53% of the reports pertained to the mobile app, while 21% involved problems with loading timelines or feeds, and 17% were related to website accessibility. Common user experiences included blank home screens, error messages, and frozen interfaces, as well as an inability to post or view content.
The outage reportedly began between 8:02 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. ET and lasted for about 60 to 90 minutes for most affected users. By mid-morning, around 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. ET, the number of complaints had decreased significantly, often falling below 1,000 as users confirmed that the platform was functioning normally again. Although some lingering issues persisted into the early afternoon, the majority of users were able to access the service without further problems.
Notably, X’s official status page did not indicate any acknowledged incidents during the outage, and there were no public statements or explanations from the company as of late Monday. Elon Musk, the owner of X, did not comment on the situation via the platform itself. As a result, the cause of the outage remained unclear. Technical experts speculated that server-side failures, network routing problems, or configuration issues could have been responsible, but no official explanation was provided.
This incident marked the third major outage for X in 2026, following earlier disruptions in January that also attracted numerous user complaints. The timing of this outage, coinciding with a holiday, likely heightened visibility as more individuals turned to social media for updates and connections.
Many users took to alternative platforms, such as Reddit, Instagram, and Facebook, to express frustrations and share screenshots of error messages. Memes and jokes circulated about the irony of a service once synonymous with constant connectivity being temporarily unavailable. Some users referenced past outages since Musk’s acquisition, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the platform’s stability since its rebranding in 2022.
Comments like “X down again? This is becoming a weekly thing” echoed on rival sites, while others expressed relief at the return of service, with remarks such as “Doomscrolling can resume” gaining traction. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges X faces in maintaining a reliable infrastructure amidst rapid changes to its features, moderation policies, and technical architecture.
Despite the outage, X’s core functionalities were restored without any apparent long-term data loss or security breaches reported. User accounts, posts, and direct messages remained intact once access was regained. By Monday afternoon, the platform was operating normally for the majority of users. Downdetector and similar monitoring sites indicated a return to typical complaint levels, suggesting that the event was temporary.
The outage serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in major digital platforms, especially in an era where social media plays a crucial role in communication, information dissemination, and commerce. For many users, the brief inability to access X highlighted how integrated the service has become in their daily routines. Fortunately, no injuries, financial impacts, or broader internet disruptions were reported as a result of this incident. Monitoring sites continue to observe for any residual or recurring issues.
