Dutch Centrist D66 Wins Election; Rob Jetten Poised for PM Role

UPDATE: The Dutch centrist party D66 has officially claimed victory in the country’s general election, with news agency ANP reporting that leader Rob Jetten, just 38 years old, is set to become the youngest prime minister in Dutch history. With nearly all votes counted from the pivotal election held on July 15, 2025, D66 has secured around 18 percent of the votes, ensuring that the far-right Freedom Party (PVV), led by Geert Wilders, cannot surpass them.

This election marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the Netherlands, as D66 is expected to initiate coalition talks to form a new government. The process typically spans several months, but the urgency is palpable as traditional parties scramble to unify their efforts. Jetten has emphasized the necessity for collaboration across the political spectrum, stating, “Voters have clearly indicated the need for cooperation.” He urged parties from both the left and right to work together on critical issues such as the housing market, migration, climate change, and the economy.

The D66’s victory is a remarkable turnaround, having tripled its seat count following an ambitious campaign and increased advertising expenditure. Meanwhile, Wilders’ PVV has experienced a decline in support compared to its shocking win in the previous election in 2023. However, the final vote count was a nail-biter, with D66 initially trailing before pulling ahead in the last moments of the tally.

Wilders has made it clear that he intends to pursue coalition discussions if his party garnered the most votes. Despite this, all mainstream parties have ruled out any collaborations with the far-right leader. The confirmation of the election results is scheduled for Monday, when mail-in ballots from Dutch citizens living abroad will be counted. Following this, party leaders are set to convene on Tuesday to discuss their next steps.

This election not only underscores the shifting political dynamics in the Netherlands but also reflects broader trends across Europe. The outcome may significantly influence policy direction and governance in the coming years. As the coalition-building process unfolds, all eyes will be on Jetten and his ability to navigate this complex political terrain.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops, and what it means for the future of Dutch leadership.
