URGENT UPDATE: Australia is bracing for an unprecedented heatwave as temperatures soar across multiple states, prompting severe fire warnings. The Bureau of Meteorology reports conditions reminiscent of the devastating 2019-20 summer bushfires, which claimed over 30 lives and scorched millions of hectares.
The oppressive heat is set to impact South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT, and New South Wales into the weekend. Residents are urged to prepare for extreme temperatures peaking at 47°C in some areas, marking the most severe conditions since the infamous Black Summer.
Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury warns, “This is not just a normal burst of summer heat. These are significantly dangerous conditions likely to affect even the young and fit.” South Australia will experience the brunt of the heat starting Wednesday, with Adelaide forecasted to reach a scorching 42°C and some inland regions potentially hitting 47°C.
In Victoria, the situation is equally dire. The capital, Melbourne, is expected to swelter under temperatures reaching 42°C, with northern areas soaring up to 46°C. Total fire bans are now in effect for the Wimmera, South West, and Central regions, including Melbourne and Geelong.
Emergency Management Commissioner Tim Wiebusch warns of “challenging extreme heatwave conditions not seen since 2019/20,” emphasizing the real risk of serious fires due to the dry conditions. Jason Heffernan, Chief Executive of the Country Fire Authority, added, “The fire seasons are starting earlier and lasting longer,” highlighting the increased risk of fire events in the upcoming days.
As the heatwave transitions towards Tasmania and the ACT, Canberra is predicted to hit 42°C on Friday, while Sydney will peak at 39°C on Saturday. Authorities are stressing the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those with health issues, as the heat intensifies.
Residents are reminded never to leave children or pets in vehicles, to stay hydrated, and to seek shelter during the hottest parts of the day. This heatwave follows Australia’s fourth-warmest year on record in 2025, further underscoring the urgent need for awareness and preparedness.
With conditions worsening, authorities are on high alert as they prepare for potential emergencies in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops.
