Pavel Talankin, a former coordinator at School No. 1 in Karabash, Russia, has emerged as an unexpected figure challenging the narrative of the Kremlin through his documentary, *Mr Nobody Against Putin*. This film, which highlights the impact of the Russian government’s educational reforms following the invasion of Ukraine, has garnered international attention and is currently in contention for an Academy Award.
For over a decade, Talankin, 34, dedicated himself to fostering a supportive environment at his small-town school in the Ural Mountains. He organized events, created a comedy club, and provided a space for students to express themselves. “I loved this place,” he shared in an interview, reflecting on his work before the war began. His students echoed his sentiments, describing the sense of community that thrived in his office.
However, everything changed in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. The Russian Education Ministry swiftly introduced a new curriculum aimed at instilling patriotic fervor in students. This included alarming initiatives such as grenade-throwing competitions and lectures that labeled dissenters as “parasites.” Mercenaries from the Wagner Group even participated in sessions teaching students how to identify landmines.
Talankin was instructed to document these changes, capturing footage that would later become pivotal for his documentary. He realized that his role had shifted from educator to an enforcer of a state-driven narrative. “What’s getting into the camera isn’t just a lesson, but history,” he remarked, expressing his discomfort with the situation.
His mother, Antonina Talankina, who also works at School No. 1 as a librarian, has her own complicated relationship with the regime. While she votes for President Vladimir Putin, she instilled in her son the importance of questioning authority. Talankin’s family history adds another layer to his story; his grandparents faced persecution during the Stalin era, which influenced his perspective on governance and power.
Talankin pursued film studies at a university in Chelyabinsk, 70 miles from his hometown. The war drastically altered the landscape of his community and his career. Feeling disillusioned, he contemplated resigning but soon connected with David Borenstein, an American documentary filmmaker based in Denmark. This relationship would prove crucial as Talankin decided to share footage with Borenstein, embarking on a project that required immense trust.
Despite operating under the government’s directives, Talankin continued to film, navigating the complexities of a regime eager to suppress dissent. He noted that teachers were coerced into promoting government propaganda, turning social media accounts into tools for the Kremlin. This manipulation of educational content aimed to shape the worldview of impressionable students.
In June 2024, shortly after a graduation ceremony, Talankin left Russia for the first time. He carried hard drives filled with footage and limited belongings, beginning a new chapter that led him to Istanbul and eventually Prague. There, he was shocked to see himself prominently featured in the film.
The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025 and won a special jury award. Yet, the success of the film came at a personal cost. Talankin faced backlash from his community, receiving messages branding him a “traitor.” Russian security services soon pressured teachers to sever ties with him, although some parents expressed shock at the propaganda being disseminated in schools.
Talankin’s mother, who remained in Karabash, dealt with the fallout from his decisions. She expressed pride in her son’s courage, though the topic of his actions has become a taboo subject among their neighbors. “It’s taboo,” she stated, emphasizing the risks associated with discussing his defiance against the state.
As Talankin awaits political asylum in the United States, he reflects on the implications of his work. He believes that *Mr Nobody Against Putin* serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of apathy and self-censorship. “It’s like a textbook, a lesson – look what awaits you if you are apolitical,” he stated.
The future remains uncertain for Talankin, who has vowed never to return to teaching. “Because I loved it and I had to say goodbye to all of it,” he said, acknowledging the emotional toll of his departure from the profession he cherished.
