URGENT UPDATE: Australians are on high alert this holiday season as police uncover a stash of stolen e-bikes and scooters in a residence in Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast. A 37-year-old man has been charged after authorities discovered five stolen e-bikes, two e-scooters, a bicycle, and illegal drugs at his home on Christmas Eve.
The Queensland Police launched an investigation following a wave of e-bike and e-scooter thefts from local shopping centres. Their search, prompted by a pattern of thefts, led them to the suspect’s home, where the alarming find was made just before the festive period.
According to police, the suspect allegedly stole a battery from an e-bike at Varsity Lakes Station around midday on November 30. Just days later, he reportedly took an e-bike from a shopping centre in Burleigh Waters.
As battery-powered vehicles surge in popularity—sales and imports of e-bikes have nearly tripled in Australia since 2020, according to UNSW expert Milad Haghani—police are urging riders to take extra precautions. Sergeant Alexander Collette emphasized the need for vigilance, stating, “Thieves are opportunistic and will target bikes, scooters, vehicles, and houses.”
He continued, “This serves as a reminder over the holidays to ensure that you lock and secure your bikes, scooters, vehicles, and houses.” With the holiday season approaching, the warning comes at a crucial time, as many Australians will be traveling and leaving their possessions unattended.
The 37-year-old suspect faces serious charges, including five counts of possession of suspected stolen property and two counts of stealing. He is expected to appear at Coolangatta Magistrates Court in January.
As the community grapples with this alarming trend, it’s essential for everyone to remain vigilant. Lock your bikes and scooters and report any suspicious activity to authorities. Stay safe this holiday season!
