UPDATE: Millions of Australians are under urgent storm warnings as a severe thunderstorm is set to unleash large hailstones, destructive winds, and flash flooding on Saturday, October 14. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has confirmed that these storms will sweep across the east and north of New South Wales (NSW), posing serious risks to residents.
The BOM reports that thunderstorms will impact broad areas of NSW, particularly in Sydney, the Hunter Valley, and Wollongong. BOM meteorologist Christie Johnson stated that NSW will experience warm and cloudy conditions before the cold front moves in. “Severe thunderstorms are possible across broad parts of NSW today,” Johnson warned. “The Sydney metropolitan area faces the greatest storm risk from late morning to early afternoon, easing in the evening.”
Severe weather is expected to reach the Hunter Region, Mid North Coast, and Northern Tablelands, with wind gusts potentially reaching an alarming 125 km/h. Johnson cautioned that storms may produce hail larger than 2 centimeters and localized heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods. “These conditions could cause damage to vehicles, homes, and vegetation,” she added. The potential for downed trees and power lines could lead to power outages and significant traffic delays.
As the storms clear later on Saturday into early Sunday, temperatures in NSW are expected to drop significantly, leading to a cooler day ahead. Meanwhile, Queensland residents should also prepare for thunderstorms, especially across the south-east inland and far north-west regions. Brisbane and the Gold Coast are expected to remain largely unaffected by severe storms, although moderate rainfall is possible.
In contrast, Victoria may see storms that are expected to be non-severe. In Sydney, expect a few showers and storms in the late morning and early afternoon, with maximum temperatures hitting 32°C. Melbourne will face rain totals between 15-30 mm, with temperatures cooler, reaching just 13°C. The nation’s capital, Canberra, is forecasted for showers and winds, with up to 15 mm of rain and temperatures reaching 26°C.
Residents in Hobart can anticipate a cloudy day with no rain expected, with a maximum temperature of 15°C. Meanwhile, Adelaide is set for a pleasant day with cloud cover and a maximum temperature of 18°C. Perth will enjoy sunny conditions, with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 28°C. Darwin will see a sunny day after morning showers, reaching highs of 34°C.
Residents across these regions are urged to stay alert and monitor updates from the BOM as conditions develop. Share this urgent warning with family and friends to ensure everyone stays safe during the impending severe weather.
