Prime Minister Takaichi’s LDP Secures Historic Majority in Election

The governing party of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has achieved a significant victory in the recent parliamentary election, securing more than two-thirds of the seats in the lower house. Preliminary results indicate that Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has won 316 seats in the 465-member lower house, surpassing the 261-seat threshold needed for an absolute majority. This marks the most successful election outcome for the LDP since its establishment in 1955 and breaks the previous record of 300 seats set in 1986 by former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone.

In a televised interview with NHK, Japan’s public broadcasting network, Takaichi expressed her readiness to enact policies that signify a marked shift to the right for Japan. She emphasized her commitment to advancing a right-wing agenda aimed at enhancing the nation’s economy and military capabilities, particularly in light of rising tensions with China. Takaichi plans to nurture closer ties with the United States as part of these efforts.

Despite not controlling the upper house, the LDP’s substantial gain in the lower house positions Takaichi to pursue her agenda effectively. “I will be flexible,” she stated, indicating her willingness to seek cooperation from opposition parties while firmly pushing her initiatives.

Takaichi, who took office as Japan’s first female Prime Minister in October 2023, called for this early election just three months into her tenure, hoping to capitalize on her popularity. Her leadership style, described as both playful and resolute, has resonated particularly with younger voters who previously showed little interest in politics.

The opposition, which includes a newly formed centrist alliance consisting of the LDP’s former coalition partner, the Buddhist-backed Komeito, and the liberal-leaning Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, has struggled to present a coherent challenge. Current projections suggest this alliance may see their combined seat count drop to half of their pre-election total of 167 seats.

Voter sentiment appears to favor Takaichi’s conservative shift. Akihito Iwatake, a 53-year-old office worker, expressed support for the LDP’s victory, stating, “With Takaichi shifting things more toward the conservative side, I think that brought this positive result.”

The Prime Minister’s agenda includes revising security and defence policies by December 2023, aimed at strengthening Japan’s military capabilities. This may involve lifting restrictions on weapons exports and moving further away from Japan’s postwar pacifist principles. Additionally, Takaichi intends to introduce stricter immigration and anti-espionage policies that appeal to far-right constituents but could raise concerns about potential civil rights infringements.

Her administration faces pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to increase defence spending, aligning Japan’s military capabilities more closely with those of the United States. With no elections scheduled until 2028, Takaichi now has the opportunity to pursue her policies without the immediate threat of electoral accountability.

The election results indicate a shifting political landscape in Japan, with far-right populist parties like Sanseito gaining traction. As Takaichi prepares to implement her vision for Japan, the implications of this election could resonate far beyond its borders, influencing both domestic policy and international relations in the years to come.
