Queensland’s tourism sector is set to receive a significant boost with the announcement of new and expanded international flight routes. The initiative, introduced by the Crisafulli Government, is part of a broader strategy known as Destination 2045, which aims to enhance global connectivity and stimulate economic growth across the regions.
Supported by the $75 million Connecting Queensland Fund, these new services will improve access through major airlines including Qantas, Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand, and China Southern Airlines. Starting in March 2026, China Southern Airlines will increase its Brisbane to Guangzhou flights to twice daily year-round, adding over 114,000 seats annually. This expansion is projected to generate nearly $500 million in visitor spending over three years and create over 1,600 direct and indirect jobs.
Strengthening International Connections
In addition to the increased flights from China, Qantas will re-establish its international services at Gold Coast Airport with new flights to Auckland starting in June 2026. Meanwhile, Fiji Airways will introduce three weekly flights from Nadi, enhancing connectivity to both the Pacific and North American regions. Air New Zealand will also expand its Brisbane schedule for the 2026 peak season, adding more than 35,000 extra seats and increasing services to Auckland and Christchurch.
Tourism Minister Andrew Powell emphasized that improved air access is crucial for expanding the visitor economy and supporting small businesses throughout Queensland. Industry leaders echoed his sentiments, highlighting that aviation access is one of the primary drivers of tourism growth, particularly for regional communities.
Airport operators noted that the introduction of these new routes reflects a robust demand and an increasing confidence in Queensland as a premier international destination. The anticipated influx of visitors is expected to benefit various regions beyond the major urban centers, promoting wider economic advantages.
This strategic enhancement of flight routes signifies a significant commitment to revitalizing Queensland’s tourism industry, fostering regional development, and ensuring that the state remains competitive in the global market.
