Queensland Offers Free Public Transport for New Year’s Celebrations

Queenslanders can look forward to a hassle-free New Year’s Eve as the state government rolls out additional public transport services across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast. Starting at 8 PM on December 31, 2023, the LNP’s Permanent 50 Cent Fares will be suspended, allowing residents to enjoy free travel on buses, trams, trains, and ferries until 5:30 AM on January 1, 2024.

The Crisafulli Government has aimed to enhance the public transport experience, offering more options for those attending New Year’s celebrations at popular vantage points. Families heading out for early fireworks displays can take advantage of the M1, 222, and 333 bus services, which will run every five minutes starting at 6 PM. Additionally, Brisbane ferry services will adjust their timetables to accommodate the anticipated increase in demand.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg emphasized the importance of making public transport the safer and more economical choice for Queenslanders. “To help Queenslanders make the most of New Year’s Eve, we have added more trains, trams, ferries, and buses, so leave the car at home and let us take care of the journey,” he stated.

For those celebrating before 8 PM, the LNP’s Permanent 50 Cent Fares will still apply, providing an affordable travel option. The government has touted this initiative as part of its commitment to delivering a fresh start for the state while ensuring that families can maintain their lifestyle during the holiday season.

Enhanced Services for New Year’s Eve

Transportation services will be significantly enhanced to accommodate the influx of travelers. More than 200 extra train services will be operational across major lines. Between 7 PM and 10 PM, trains on several corridors will run every 15–30 minutes. Special arrangements will be in place for the 7:45 PM and midnight fireworks in Brisbane, with trains running every 15 minutes on specific lines and every 20 minutes on others.

Gold Coast trams will also be operating at a 15-minute frequency during the early morning hours, with services running as frequently as every 7 to 8 minutes between 7 AM and 2 AM. Buses on routes such as M1, 100, and 130 will also operate at up to a five-minute frequency, ensuring timely service for all passengers.

Accessibility and Information

To facilitate smooth travel, the government encourages all attendees to have patience as they navigate the increased passenger flow. “We just ask everyone to have patience as we get you to your destinations and back home quickly and safely,” Mickelberg added.

For real-time updates and further information, passengers can download the Translink app, visit translink.com.au, or call 13 12 30. This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to provide accessible and affordable public transport solutions, especially during busy periods like New Year’s Eve.
