Mount Gambier Celebrates New Citizens at Vibrant Ceremony

Residents of Mount Gambier and Berrin celebrated their official acceptance as Australian citizens during a vibrant ceremony held by the City of Mount Gambier on November 15, 2023. This event marked a significant milestone for 30 individuals who took the pledge to uphold the values and responsibilities that come with citizenship.

The ceremony, attended by family and friends, showcased the diversity of the new citizens. Participants hailed from various countries, reflecting the multicultural fabric of Australia. Each individual received a certificate of citizenship, symbolizing their commitment to their new home and its democratic values.

Mayor Lynette Martin, who presided over the ceremony, emphasized the importance of inclusion and community in her address. She stated, “Becoming a citizen is not just about rights; it’s about embracing responsibilities and contributing positively to our society.” Her remarks resonated with the crowd and underscored the significance of the day for the new citizens.

The event also featured performances by local artists, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere. As the new citizens celebrated, they were encouraged to engage with their local communities and to participate actively in civic life.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 30,000 people received citizenship in 2022, highlighting the ongoing growth of Australia’s diverse population. The ceremony in Mount Gambier is part of a broader initiative to recognize and welcome new citizens across the country.

In addition to the citizenship ceremonies, the City of Mount Gambier has been actively promoting community cohesion through various programs and events. Local organizations have contributed by offering support to newcomers, helping them to integrate into Australian society effectively.

As the new citizens move forward, they carry with them a sense of belonging and the opportunity to participate fully in the life of their community. The City of Mount Gambier’s commitment to celebrating this significant occasion illustrates the values of acceptance and unity that are foundational to Australian society.
